Mike’s Story: Chicago ’s Pullman district on the southside is where I grew up; surrounded by steel mills and ship yards. Eating well was a way of life. Aunt Pam’s neighborhood barbeques could always bring out old friends and create new ones. As a boy, I couldn’t wait until it was my turn on the grill.

These Chicago summer memories inspired me to create Calhoun’s Original Southside Bar-B-QueSauce. The rich flavors in my barbeque sauce are rooted in the red clay of Louisiana, and migrated north with my family to the bluesy streets on the southside of Chicago. With just enough heat to excite but not ignite, this barbeque sauce is tangy, spicy, and sweet. It is a versatile sauce that compliments pork, beef, poultry, vegetables, shrimp and tofu.

One taste will conjure up endless recipe ideas of your own. Laissez le bon temps rouler! (Let the good times roll!)

Calhoun’s in Humboldt : Michael came to the north coast nearly a decade ago with a dream to start his own barbeque business. Here he met Alisa, a local teacher, and their combined love of food became the beginnings of a new local start-up: Calhoun’s Southside Bar-B-Que. “The first time I tasted Mike’s barbeque sauce, I couldn’t wait to cook with it,” recalls Alisa, “I knew this was something Humboldt had to get a taste of.” Mike and Alisa soon began home canning Calhoun’s Original Southside Bar-B-Que Sauce and sharing it with friends, co-workers, and family. At first taste north coasters instantly loved Calhoun’s sauce. As friends started requesting barbeque sauce by the case, Mike and Alisa knew it was time to offer Calhoun’s Original Southside Bar-B-Que Sauce to the greater community. With support from local teachers, the SBDC, AEDC, and CR Food Works, Calhoun’s Original Southside Bar-B-Que Sauce is now available in local stores and growing.
